Royal York
Hotel

The famous Royal York Hotel, located in the core of downtown Toronto, is an iconic circa-1929 landmark. Retaining original architectural treasures such as hand-painted ceilings and travertine pillars, the historic building's envelope was meticulously modernized through a multi-year roofing and copper restoration program.

Project Scope

The management of the legendary Royal York Hotel trusted RTM to execute critical replacement and conservation work across the massive downtown facility. Spanning multiple years, our specialized divisions were deployed to address aging building envelope components.

The comprehensive technical scope included the complete replacement of various flat roofing systems, the implementation of custom fabricated copper flashings, and the restoration of intricate decorative copper components.

Notable Details

To protect the magnificent interiors of the Royal York Hotel, including its renowned hand-painted ceilings and historical travertine pillars, our flat roofing teams applied high-performance waterproofing systems designed for exceptional longevity.

Operating directly above active commercial operations, our sheet metal division fabricated and installed customized copper flashings and restored traditional decorative elements. Hand-crafted seams and historical metal profiles were prioritized to honor the 1929 architectural language.

The intense logistical requirements of working on a fully occupied, landmark hotel in downtown Toronto required daily coordination and minimal disruption to the guest experience.

Final Result

The completed multi-year project successfully restored the exterior envelope of the Royal York Hotel, defending its grand interiors from water intrusion and weather damage.

By combining flat roofing technology with traditional coppersmithing and specialized masonry, RTM secured the integrity of this legendary Canadian hotel—ensuring it continues to stand as Toronto's premier heritage destination for generations to come.
