8 King Street
Restoration
Our work on the impressive 8 King Street commercial building in downtown Toronto brought together our experts in masonry, coppersmithing, and heritage restoration. Working within an occupied building with multiple tenants required constant coordination between RTM’s management team and the building’s owners to execute this monumental facade and window replacement program.
Project Scope
The sweeping scope of this multi-year restoration targeted the complete revitalization of the building's exterior envelope. This heavily involved the modernization of its glazing systems while rigorously preserving its historic aesthetic.
Our specialized teams executed the highly technical replacement of 420 bronze-cladded windows and 313 steel windows, engineered to deliver modern thermal performance while maintaining the structure's authentic, original sightlines.
Notable Details
Beyond the massive window replacement program, our in-house trades executed intricate restorations across a variety of traditional heritage materials. This included delicate, specialized repairs to the building's original terra cotta and cast iron elements to halt deterioration.
To permanently secure the building envelope from the top down, our coppersmithing division replaced complex lead flashings and fabricated and installed a beautiful, new standing seam copper roof.
Final Result
The successful completion of the 8 King Street restoration stands as a testament to RTM's ability to navigate the intense logistical challenges of an occupied downtown high-rise.
Through constant, transparent coordination with building management, we delivered uncompromising heritage craftsmanship with minimal disruption to active tenants, securing this iconic commercial landmark for decades to come.
