Elgin & Winter Garden
Theatre Restoration

RTM completed a complete exterior façade restoration of the Elgin and Winter Garden theatres on Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario. As the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world, this unique project required highly specialized treatments, including intricate terra cotta cleaning, masonry replacements, and comprehensive wood window restoration.

Project Scope

A complete exterior façade restoration was performed on the Elgin and Winter Garden theatres. Historic buildings of this magnitude require highly specialized treatments, a challenge that our masonry and carpentry teams relish.

The scope of work encompassed meticulous heritage methods, prioritizing the careful cleaning and sensitive replacement of the building's intricate terra cotta details, alongside a full restoration of the historic wood windows across the Yonge Street elevation.

Notable Details

These unique theatres represent the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world. Due to their unparalleled historical significance, the project demanded an extraordinary level of care and architectural accuracy throughout the multi-year restoration process.

Our specialized masonry teams executed delicate terra cotta cleaning techniques designed to remove decades of urban buildup without damaging the fragile historic glazing. Where terra cotta units were beyond repair, exact profile replacements were integrated seamlessly into the facade.

Simultaneously, our carpentry division undertook the restoration of the theatre's original wood windows, ensuring operability and weather resistance while maintaining the authentic sightlines of the Edwardian era design.
